ABOUT THE BOAT

The description of the HOLIDAY 23 that follows is based on the new boat specification. In the case of a used boat there may well be additional equipment and personalised modifications which enhance the original.

General Description

With almost 200 HOLIDAY 23s (H23) sold to date, the H23 has become a legend in its own time and is one of the largest keel boat classes in South Africa today.

The H23 is an ideal yacht for the first time owner and family.

With additional gear it provides the excitement of racing in ever growing "one design " events, but the general focus of the class continues to be on fun and social regattas. The Holiday 23 Class Owners Association is extremely active with organised events throughout the year.

The HOLIDAY 23 features a deck-stepped mast in a tabernacle, which means the mast can be easily raised or lowered and this together with the lifting keel makes for complete versatility.

All of this means that the boat can be easily floated on and off its trailer and towed behind a medium sized bakkie, kombi or large family car. Below decks the H23 is incredibly spacious and ideal for the family weekend or holiday away. A homely galley provides adequate facilities for meal preparation and cooking.

There is a private heads facility, plenty of stowage space, all the comforts of home and sleeping accommodation for five. However the most important aspect is that the HOLIDAY 23 really does sail well!

The HOLIDAY 23 has been designed by Angelo Lavranos for safe sailing in coastal and inland waters and complies with Category 4 of the National Safety Regulations.

Construction

  • Glass-reinforced polyester (GRP) hull made in one- piece moulding, with stringers

  • Glass-reinforced polyester (GRP) deck

  • Balsa sandwich construction on deck with the benefit of thermal and accoustical insulation

  • High quality NPG isophthalic gelcoat on underwater surfaces

  • Anti-skid panels, fitting pads and recesses in the deck mouldings

  • Large self-draining cockpit with roomy locker

  • Deck joined to hull with bonding compound and glassed with GRP strapping to form a strong monocoque structure which is absolutely watertight

  • Cast-iron lifting bulb keel

  • Self-draining anchor locker moulding

  • Exterior colours to owner's choice incorporated in the gelcoat

  • Waterline and one stripe as standard, pigmented into gelcoat

Interior Structure & Accommodation

  • Sleeping accommodation for five with a double berth in the fore cabin, a double berth in the saloon and a quarter berth aft to port

  • Heads complete with Porta-Potti chemical toilet - Hanging locker in heads compartment - Dinette for six with drop-leaf table

  • Galley situated alongside the keel case - Choice of Teak or Oak finishes

  • All varnish is hard-wearing polyurethane - Galley finished in formica
