034 Liz & Ashley Bronstring Mahi “strong” in Hawaiian
We recently bought Mahi from Dave Powell and decided not to change the name ... So I had to ask for the meaning .. Mahi means “strong” in Hawaiian, and I guess we can all vouch for the fact that these H23’s are strong little boats with big hearts!

053 John Goddard & Duncan Smith Providence
The original name was "Exchange Rate", however, it would seem that some wag put an "S' in front of the name and the previous owner took a dim view and changed the name to "Providence". The boat is now kept in Harare, but sailed on Kariba and hopefully Inhassoro in Mozambique.

055 Gordon Fitzsimons Smidgin Something small that gives a lot of pleasure.
How Smidgin got her name….
I bought Smidgin in 1987 from the factory she cost R23 000 I have had her since then and not only have I had a lot of fun and excitement sailing her but she has appreciated in value…. what more can you ask for.
After I ordered her from John Robertson Yachts my wife Colleen and I and my sister who came out from the UK went on a holiday to the Okavango organized by Clive Walker and as we were traveling in dugout log canoes we were only allowed to take the absolute essentials that we could fit into a small bag that we were given.
At night we would stop on an island and set up camp cooking around a fire and sleeping in the open. One night we were feeling relaxed after a day on the water a good meal, the guides were playing music on instruments they had made out of wood and grass and in the background were the nighttime sounds of the bush when John one of the guys who we got to know produced a bottle of brandy. We all marveled at how he had found room for it in his bag and what had he left behind in order to fit it in, however, he unscrewed the top filled it and leaning over to me said “would you like a wee smidgin?”
So I associate Smidgin with something small that gives a lot of pleasure.

114 Paul van der Walt Why Knot
My H23 (sail 114) is called “Why Knot?”. Well, the
reason is quite easy: because splicing is more difficult than knotting
and which also takes up more of my valuable beer-time. But then some
wise guy asked why not “why not?”?: Simply because after enough
beer-time I don’t spell so efectifly wel ok anymore. Whose
that saying but why not “Y not?”? ……. you’ve got me now, I’ll try and
figure that one out after another little Smidgen of the good stuff!
SAIL NO OWNER YACHT NAME MEANING
118 Keith Elphinstone GOOKMOUSE Previous owners children's nicknames.
I purchased this boat from Dave Drewett earlier this year who in the mean time has purchased a much bigger boat (cat). Dave had named this Holiday 23 GOOKMOUSE after his two children's nickname one being GOOK and the other MOUSE. So far I can not even explain how my family and I are enjoying this wonderful boat and I would recommend a Holiday 23 to anyone!

124 Marcel Prydekker About Time
Well, as you know my Holiday23 (Sail # 124) is called “About Time”. It’s a bit of a long story but I’ll keep it as short as possible. I’ve been sailing since the age of 12yrs from the early 70’s when later I met my school friend while sailing Dabchicks at VLC. At the time I told him that one day I will own my own yacht which will be more comfortable and dryer to sail than a Dabchick – I just got this strange and confused look, he knew nothing about sailing, still today. After buying my H23 five years ago, I was in a dilemma, I needed to change the name for various reasons (another story). I just could not come up with a suitable or apt name for her. I invited all my friends and family to come and see her. The first words that my old school friend uttered to me when he saw her was “It’s About Time !!!” you got a yacht. Well that was it, this was going to be her name. I must say, besides the obvious, it’s been quite an apt name, sailing is all about time, patience, peace & serenity and an accumulation of knowledge.

137 Philippe Pringiers Umoya The Wind in Xhosa
W
hen I bought the boat and was looking for a name, I let the whole family (have 5 kids) come up with ideas. It was one of the daughters who suggested I ask our domestic help, who is a Xhosa lady, for some translations into her language. This way we came up with Umoya. A rather appropriate name for a sailing a boat especially in Gordon's Bay.SAIL NO OWNER YACHT NAME MEANING
158 David Vanderbanck & Sta-Sea Named after the original owner Mr. M.D. Stacey
Gavin Harwood
Yacht was bought by us in Cape Town from a Mr. Carr, in November 1999 and shipped to Mauritius. At first we wanted to call her Afri-Can because David is Canadian and Gavin is African (Zim/SA) but we realized this would be bad luck to change her name so then decided we would put an X in front of Sta-Sea instead. We then realized we would probably get arrested by the coast guard because she was called X-Sta-Sea so we kept to the original name Sta-Sea. You wanted to hear it so now you have!!

SAIL NO OWNER YACHT NAME MEANING
180 Coenie Thiart PeeDeeQ “Pretty Damn Quick”
The first owner from whom I bought the boat was a very meticulous person. It took him almost a year to prepare the boat before launching it. While working on the boat he was listening to a story on the radio and the Sergeant major instructed the soldier to go and fetch him something and told him to “make it PDQ”
SAIL NO OWNER YACHT NAME MEANING
Eckehard Fricke Bom Tempo “Good Weather” or “Good Time”
I always liked sailing but I wanted to own a boat. Then I came to Maputo and had the chance to sail with "Bom Tempo" what means "Good weather" and also "Good time". I adored it to sail in the Delgoa Bay and go to Inhaca. When the owner wanted to sell the boat, we came easily to an agreement and now I am one of the few owners of a Yacht in Maputo.
